Combo Fishing With Tenacious Charters
If you’re into fishing, you know it’s always fun to switch techniques and target different species throughout the day. If you’re not into fishing (yet!), a combo charter can keep it interesting by giving you a chance to try different techniques and see a variety of interesting Alaskan fish.
Our combo charters are designed to send you home with fillets of your choice from two of our main target species: halibut, salmon or rockfish.
These two-species trips are offered as Group or Private Charters, and available only as a Full-Day trip, due to the distance between viable fishing grounds when seeking multiple species.
If you’re not sure of the right option for you — give us a call at (907) 891-7009 and we can talk about what you’re interested in and offer suggestions.
What is the best time of year to go COMBO fishing in Homer, Alaska?
Fishing from mid-July and in August is often our favorite time of the season simply due to the abundance of life here in Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet.
If you’re after Halibut & Salmon, July and August is prime for both. The weather in those months is also often the best, allowing us to get out to more remote fishing grounds for Rockfish, Halibut & Salmon.
How do you fish on a combo trip?
When on a combo trip, part of the fun is changing up the gear and fishing techniques throughout the day.
Halibut are bottom fish and are targeted by dropping a weighed lure close to the bottom of the ocean. Salmon are often targeted by trolling with the use of down riggers. Jigging is a common technique when seeking Rockfish.
Your captain may opt to anchor for part of the day, may drift over a stretch of the ocean floor, or be under slow power while trolling. You are likely to fish in multiple spots during the day on a combo charter.
How do I get my Fish home?
Filleting service is included at no extra charge.
Getting your fish professionally vacuum-packed and frozen after filleting is highly recommended and maintains the highest flavor and quality of your fish.
Vacuum-packing, freezing & shipping services are available through a local fish processor, Homer Fish Processing. There is no need to arrange this service in advance.
Vacuum packing and freezing services are approximately $1.65 per pound, though prices may vary.
Shipping rates vary based on your desired location, but expect to spend a few hundred dollars to ship a medium-sized box.
The most cost-effective way to transport your fish home is as a checked bag/box on your flight, if your travel plans allow.
Airline-approved shipping boxes are available for purchase through Homer Fish Processing.
The fish processor in Homer can store your fish at no extra cost for a week or two, and the Ted Stevens Airport in Anchorage also offers Freezer Storage for ticketed passengers.
If properly packaged and blast-frozen, fish can stay safely frozen for around 48 hours in transit.
