We target King (Chinook) Salmon as well as Silver (Coho) salmon when they are running. You will need to purchase a King Stamp on your fishing license when on any salmon charter.

What is the best time of year to go Salmon fishing in Homer, Alaska?

King (Chinook) Salmon can be caught year-round, though peak season is typically mid-June through mid-August.

Silver (Coho) Salmon begin running in mid-July until late August.

July and early August are some of our favorite times to fish, simply because of the variety of fish available at that time, salmon being among them.

Consider a Combo Charter, which targets both Salmon and Halibut or Rockfish!

How do you fish for Salmon?

Salmon in the saltwater are often targeted through trolling and the use of down-riggers. We will occasionally use other methods.

Trolling is done at slow speeds, pulling lures or bait through the water at various depths of the water column.

The weighed ball on the down-rigger is used to pull the lure down to a specific depth, and is designed to release from your line when a fish strikes.

The crew of Tenacious Charters will properly set the gear, and instruct you on the best practices to fight a salmon once one hits the line. Then it’s up to you to bring it to the boat, during which our crew will direct you on proper technique, and net the fish once it is in reach.

King salmon are hard-fighting fish and getting them into the boat is an exercise in patience, strength, coordination, and most of all, fun!

What are the bag limits for salmon?

Check out our Licenses & Regulations page for the most up-to-date information on bag limits for all our target species.

How do I get my salmon home?

Filleting service is included at no extra charge.

Getting your fish professionally vacuum-packed and frozen after filleting is highly recommended and maintains the highest flavor and quality of your fish.

Vacuum-packing, freezing & shipping services are available through a local fish processor, Homer Fish Processing. There is no need to arrange this service in advance.

Vacuum packing and freezing services are approximately $1.65 per pound, though prices may vary.

Shipping rates vary based on your desired location, but expect to spend a few hundred dollars to ship a medium-sized box.

The most cost-effective way to transport your fish home is as a checked bag/box on your flight, if your travel plans allow.

Airline-approved shipping boxes are available for purchase through Homer Fish Processing.

The fish processor in Homer can store your fish at no extra cost for a week or two, and the Ted Stevens Airport in Anchorage also offers Freezer Storage for ticketed passengers.

If properly packaged and blast-frozen, fish can stay safely frozen for around 48 hours in transit.
